Dreamtime, a traveller’s images of Australia
About the Australian Series
These paintings were produced between 1987-88 as a result of a visit
to Australia lasting nearly 6 months in 1987. I was artist in Residence
in Perth at Curtin University; Brisbane College of Advanced Education
and Northern Rivers College, Lismore, New South Wales. For me it
was a unique opportunity; I took study leave from Edinburgh College
of Art where I was lecturing at the time and with the benefit of
Winston Churchill Travel Fellowship and a British Council Award
I was able to combine being artist in residence with guest lecturing
and extensive travel in Australia. This experience enabled me to
explore my own ideas in a new context. The exhibition - 'Dreamtime,
a traveller' images of Australia' was exhibited at the Talbot
Rice Gallery, University of Edinburgh in November 1988. It subsequently
toured to the McLaurin Art Gallery, Ayr; the Crawford Arts Centre,
St Andrews, and Queensland House, London.
The paintings are about my visit to Australia and reflect my experiences
while there; the title 'Dreamtime - a traveller’s images of
Australia' refers to my dream to travel to Australia and echoes
the Australian Aborigine mythology 'dreamtime'.
