Online Gallery: Cyprus Footnotes
About the Cyprus Series
This series of drawings and paintings has come from visits Janet
Patterson made to Cyprus in 2003 and 2004. Initially Patterson went
to work in a studio in Limassol in November 2003, her first visit
to Cyprus, and she became fascinated by the landscape and atmosphere,
the heat and the light.
The centrepiece of the exhibition comprises three large drawings
which she worked on in the studio in Cyprus. She also made notes
and took photographs, and on her return to her London studio has
worked from these. The exhibition is called 'Cyprus Footnotes' because
the material other than the original drawings has been formed entirely
from recollections, memories and reference material collected while
there. They are the 'footnotes' to the large drawings - they add
colour and description, and an indigenous feeling of the environment
there.
